Objective To observe the effect of polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum on calcium and phosphate metabolism in rats with chronic renal failure induced by adenine. Methods Ninety male Waster rats fed with adenine 0.3g/(kg·d) for 25 days. Rats were then divided into five groups. The first, second and third groups were fed with polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum 1.5g/(kg·d), 0.75g/(kg·d) and 0.375g/(kg·d), respectively, for 22 days. Rats in the fourth group were fed with calcium carbonate and those in the fifth group without drugs as the control groups. Body weight was measured at day 7, 14 and 21 of the treatment. Serum calcium, phosphate, PTH, urea, creatinine, K+, RBC, Hb, platelet and hematocrit were determined one hour after the treatment at day 10 and 21. Rats were killed and the kidney was taken for analysis at day 22 of the treatment. Results Serum phosphate decreased significantly in rats fed with polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum 1.5g/(kg·d). Serum K+ also lowered to a certain degree in rats of this group. In the positive control group fed with calcium carbonate, serum calcium elevated. Conclusion Polystyrene sulfonic lanthanum decreases serum phosphate in rats with chronic renal failure induced by adenine. It also reduces serum K+ to a certain degree.
