Abstract: Background. The study aimed to assess the effects of L-Carnitine supplementation on lipid profile in maintenance hemodialysis patients with meta-analytical techniques. Methods. A literature search was performed for randomized trials comparing maintenance hemodialysis patients from L-Carnitine protocol versus placebo. The following outcomes were evaluated: Triglyceride(TG), total cholesterol(TC), low density lipoprotein(LDL), high density lipoproteins(HDL). Results. (1)Nine comparative studies of 259 patients matched the inclusion criteria,134 for L-Carnitine protocol and 125 for placebo protocol. The follow-up time was 12 weeks to 6 months. (2)Patients treated with L-Carnitine protocol showed a tendency of lower TC and a significantly lower LDL, but no difference in TG and HDL. However, subgroup analysis showed that patients treated with L-Carnitine more than 24weeks had lewer TC but no difference in TG, HDL, and LDL. Conclusion. The study found that application of L-carnitine had some positive impacts (reduce LDL levels) on lipid metabolism in hemodialysis patients. Moreover, the effect might be associated with time.
