Abstract: Protein energy wasting (PEW) is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease, especially those treated with maintenance hemodialysis. PEW affects their survival, mortality and quality of life. PEW clinically manifests low serum albumin and prealbumin concentrations, reduced body mass index (BMI), and decreased dietary protein intake. Therefore, early identification and diagnosis of PEW is essential for the prognosis of chronic kidney disease patients.
