Abstract

【Abstract】Objective To review the complications of cuffed central venous catheter with its management. Methods A retrospetive study was performed in 25 cuffed central venous catheter procedures during the last five years, which include 8 right internal jugular catheterizations, 2 left internal jugular catheterizations, 12 right subclavian catheterizations, 3 left subclavian catheterizations. Results The major complications include catheter malposition 4 of 25; infection 8 of 25 (32%)(1.3 episodes per 1000 catheter-days), 2 (25%) of the 8 cases were salvaged successfully; catheter thrombosis 6 of 25 (24%), 3(75%) of the 4 cases in intraluminal thrombus were salvaged successfully. The cuffed central venous catheter was kept for 2 to 27 months, median 8 months. Conclusion Hemodialysis with cuffed central venous catheter in some patients who have exhausted all other access is essential and its complications can be controlled.
