Abstract

Objective To study the effect of sodium and water restriction on blood volume and systemic fluid status. Methods Fourteen CAPD patients with mild edema were selected, the blood volume of whom were measured by bioimpedence analysis. The patients were advised to take salt and water restriction without using more hypertonic glucose solutions and were followed up for 4 weeks. Results The difference between actual body weight and dry weight of these patients was (3.54±2.20)Kg before salt and water restriction. After taking salt and water restriction, the body weights of 11 patients decreased by (3.27±2.68)Kg. The other 3 patients used more 2.5% glucose dialysate by themselves. Edema disappeared in 7 (63.6%) patients, lessened in 3(27.3%) patients and did not change in only 1 (0.9%) patient. The general life status of 5 patients improved whereas others did not change. Five patients decreased their use of high-osmotic dialysate at the end of the follow-up. Conclusions Salt and water restriction can be effectively used to treat fluid overload in CAPD patients and this can improve the patients' general health status.
