Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of hemodialysis(HD) on the serum nitric oxide levels in the uremic patients. Methods Twenty-three uremic patients were selected, including 12 dialysis group patients and 11 non-dialysis Group patients. The serum NO2- /NO-3 levels in dialysis group patients (at the 10 minutes, 1 hour,2 hours, 4 hours after HD and pre-HD)and in non-dialysis group patients were assayed. Results The serum NO2-/NO3- levels were markedly increased in the uremic patients both the dialysis group and non-dialysis group. The serum NO2-/NO3- levels was significantly lower in the dialysis patients than non-dialysis patients. The plasma NO2-/NO3- levels at the 10 minutes after the initiation of HD was significantly higher than that at the 30 minutes,1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours and pre-HD. No significant differences in serum NO2-/NO3- levels were found between the pre-HD and after-HD. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that uremic patients have high serum NO2-/NO3- levels. Maintenance hemodialysis led to significant drop in serum NO2-/NO3- levels.
