Objective To compare the fluid status in diabetic and non-diabetic peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods In a cross-sectional study, 58 patients treated with peritoneal dialysis for at least 3 months were investigated. Among them, 20 cases were diabetics and the other cases were nondiabetics. We reviewed their dialysis prescription, peritoneal ultrafiltration, urine volume and fluid status. Results There were no significant differences in the age, gender, height and urine volume between the two groups. However, the body weights, dialysate doses, dialysate glucose load, peritoneal ultrafiltration and total fluid removal were significantly higher in diabetics as compared to non-diabetics. Furthermore, there were significantly more edematous patients in diabetics as compared to non-diabetics. Conclusions The present study suggest that our diabetic patients were more fluid overloaded as compared to non-diabetics despite that they used more hypertonic glucose solutions and had higher peritoneal ultrafiltration and higher total fluid removal; this indicates that our diabetic patients must have significantly higher salt and fluid intake.
