Abstract

Objective To investigate the level of serum ceruloplasmin in hemodialysis patients and the relationship between serum ceruloplasmin, calcium and phosphorus metabolism and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Methods Serum ceruloplasmin, serum calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone (PTH) of 68 hemodialysis patients and 50 healthy controls were tested and the relationship between serum ceruloplasmin and serum calcium, phosphorus, multiplication of calcium and phosphorus, PTH were analyzed. Results The level of serum ceruloplasmin was higher in hemodialysis patients with(787.6±248.6) active unit/dl than (376.5±146.7)active unit/dl in healthy controls, P<0.05. The longer of the hemodialysis time, the patients had the higher of the serum ceruloplasmin with was (825.3±286.7) avtive unit/dl in patients who underwent over two-year hemodialysis yet it was (598.5±186.4)active unit/dl in patients less than two-year hemodialysis, P<0.05. Serum calcium were lower in hemodialysis patients than in healthy controls, P<0.05, and there was a significant negative relation between serum calcium and ceruloplasmin, P<0.05; serum phosphorus and PTH were higher in hemodialysis patients than in healthy controls, P<0.05, and there was a significant positive relation between them and serum ceruloplasmin, P<0.05. Conclusions Serum ceruloplasmin in hemodialysis patients may have some relation with calcium and phosphorus metabolism disorder and secondary hyperparathyroidism. 
