Abstract

Objective To analyze the factors influencing serum albumin in peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods 217 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients were enrolled. The patients were divided into tow groups according to their serum albumin levels. The relationship between serum albumin and other parameters were analyzed using stepwise multivariate regression analysis. Results Serum albumin was positively correlated with hand-grip strength and serum creatinine. Serum albumin was significant lower in malnourished patients. Regression analysis showed that complication, fluid status, age, SCRP were significant independent predictors of serum albumin (P<0.05). Conclusion Serum albumin level could be uses in nutritional assessment. However, serum albumin level was influenced by multiple factors, including inflammation, fluid status, complication and age which should thus be taken into account when using albumin as a nutritional parameter.
