Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects and safety of molecular adsorbent recirculat-ing system (MARS) for the treatment of liver failure. Methods Twelve patients with liver failure were treated with MARS on the basis of routine therapy. The liver function,kidney function,prothrombin activity (PTA),electrolyte and the side effects were observed and recorded. Results After MARS treatment the patients,clinical symptoms were improved obviously. The serum Tbil, creatinine and BUN levels decreased significantly(p<0.05). No significant differences of PTA and serum electrolytes level before and after artificial manipulation were observed (P>0.05). The survival rate was 58.3% with the treatment of MARS. Conclusion MRAS can effectively improve the clinical symptoms, liver function,and increase the short-term survival rate. MARS may be an effective and safe treatment for liver failure patients.
