Abstract

Objective To investigate the sleep quality of patients on maintenance haemodialysis and to find the related factors. Methods Quality of sleep was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). One hundread and thirty four patients on maintenance haemodialysis were divided into two groups according to their score of PSQI (good sleepers PSQI≤5, poor sleepers PSQI>5). Results Eighty-three (62%) subjects were “poor sleepers”. There were significant differences in age, cigarette smoking between the two groups, as well as in the concentration of hemoglobin and serum albumin. There were no significant difference in gender, duration of dialysis, water withdraw, blood pressure control, Kt/v and iPTH value between the two groups. Conclusion Sleep complaints are very common in hemodialysis patients. Advancing age, smoking, lower hemoglobin and serum albumin might be associated with the high rate of sleep complaints among the dialysis patients.
