Abstract

Objectives To observe serum adiponectin (ADPN) in relation to residual renal function and dialysis adequacy in peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods Residual glomerular filtration rate, Kt/V and creatinine clearance (Ccr) of peritoneal dialysis and Kt/V and Ccr of residual kidney were estimated in 59 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients treated in this hospital. Serum ADPN level was measured by ELISA. Results Serum ADPN was higher in CAPD patients than in healthy subjects (13.09 7.54/ml vs 6.65 4.33/ml, P<0.01). Serum ADPN did not correlate to total Ccr and Kt/V, nor to residual renal Ccr and Kt/V, peritoneal Ccr and Kt/V and residual kidney glomerular filtration rate. There was also no relationship between serum ADPN and peritoneal transport type. Serum ADPN inversely related to body mass index, triglycerides, C-reaction protein and interleukin-6, and positively related to high density lipoproteins (P <0.01) of the patients. Conclusions Serum ADPN is influenced by inflammation, body mass index and lipids metabolism, but not related to residual renal function, dialysis adequacy and peritoneal transport type of the patients.
