Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship between left ventricular hypertrophy and serum adiponectin in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Methods MHD patients were divided into two groups, the patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (group A, n=18), and the patients without left ventricular hypertrophy (group B, n=14). Serum adiponectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA). The correlation of serum ADPN to left ventricular mass (LVM) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) was analyzed among the two groups and normal controls. Results Serum ADPN was significantly higher in MHD patients than in normal controls. Group A had lower ADPN than group B (P<0.05). Serum adiponectin was reversely correlated to left ventricular hypertrophy (r = -0.576). Conclusion Serum adiponectin may be related to the development of left ventricular hypertrophy and therefore to the cardiovascular diseases in uremic patients.
