Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of plasmapheresis in treatment of respiratory muscular paralysis crisis in patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome and myasthenia gravis. Methods Among the 32 patients showing respiratory muscular paralysis crisis complicated in Guillain-Barre syndrome or myasthenia gravis, 15 patients received drug treatment, and 17 patients received drug plus plasmapheresis treatment. We compared mechanical ventilation and hospitalization days between the two groups. Results The period of using mechanical ventilation was 8.7 8.4 days in drug plus plasmaphresis group and was 19.8 15.0 days in drug group (P<0.05). Hospitalization time was 33.3 21.9 days in drug plus plasmaphresis group and was 52.7 28.4 days in drug group (P<0.05). Conclusions Plasmapheresis reduces the time of using mechanical ventilation and hospitalization day in respiratory muscular paralysis crisis occurring in patients of Guillain- Barre syndrome or myasthenia gravis.
